Hebt u nu Dranouter Folk achter de rug, dan bent u toe aan een beetje rust. Maar vergeet ondertussen ook niet te genieten van de zomer, en dat kan met deze aanstekelijk klinkende cd van Snakes in Exile, een Belgische band die ook op Dranouter stond en die nog altijd vertrekt
vanuit de Ierse traditionele muziek. Dat doen ze heel overtuigend, bulkend van enthousiasme en speelplezier en voelbaar vanuit een meer dan behoorlijke beheersing van het genre, geen kleine verdienste voor een groep die niet van het groene eiland zelve komt. De sfeer is afwisselend feestelijk, poëtisch, opwindend, romantisch of een beetje bluesy, maar altijd doorleefd en authentiek. Een bijzonder toffe folk-cd.
Dag Allemaal Snakes in Exile, Merrily Polluted
Met Merrily Polluted brengt Snakes in Exile (St. Patrick zou bij de kerstening van Ierland alle slangen verjaagd hebben) zijn derde cd uit. Sinds 2000 is de groep een kwartet door de komst van drummer/percussionist Gette De Deken. Op de nieuwe cd brengt Snakes in Exile vooral zelf geschreven werk, waarbji met name zanger/gitarist Luc Baillieul van zich doet spreken. De kwaliteit is hoog. De driestemmige zang is haarscherp (doe denken aan de Canadese groep Moxy Fruvous) en de
instrumentbeheersing buiten kijf. Ierse muziek is een belangrijk referentiepunt, maar er zijn allerlei invloeden - Amerikaan, cajun, pop. Het gaat van zeer energiek tot bijzonder ingetogen. De vormgeving is uitstekend en alle teksten zijn opgenomen in het cd-boekje. Snakes in Exile is klaar voor het grote werk.

Second Skin
The music is fresh, lively and exciting, steeped in Celtic roots and folk-rock stylings. And the band, Snakes in Exile, is Belgian. Belgium isn't a country we hear much from here at Rambles, but if Snakes in Exile is representative of the music they're producing there, we need to hear more!! The album Second Skin is a hoot from the start, and the band's energy never falters as the musicians plow through a battery of Celtic and folk traditions, pop influences and even a hint or two of gospel. The band is Gert Meulemans (vocals, bass, mandolin), Peter
Van Aken (vocals, accordion, piano, whistling) and Luc Baillieul (vocals, guitars, bodhran). Guests on the album are Guy Fletcher, Peter Van Woensel, Bartje Cuyvers, Pol Van Laere and Rohal de Ridder on a variety of instruments. They didn't start out as a Celtic band, according to details on their website, but grew into it gradually. Whatever they did, it worked. The CD features a fun, varied mix of traditional songs, including "The Raggle Taggle Gypsy," "South Australia," "The Lord of the Dance" and "The Parting Glass," and original material such as "Taboo or Not Taboo," "The Fiddler's
Tale," "Young Master Dribble" and "Imaginary Stairs." To keep listeners guessing, they toss in a few unusual choices such as a blue-eyed soul interpretation of the Rolling Stones' "Jumpin' Jack Flash" and an energetic, infectious gospel song, "Goodnight, the Lord is Coming," both performed a cappella. Peter Van Aken demonstrates amazing breath control on the "Lakewood/The Triepmuir Hornpipe/Royal Belfast" set, on which he carries the entire melody by whistling. (No, there's no tin whistle involved here, just his natural talent!) The flow between tracks and styles is natural and entertaining.
Snakes in Exile has awakened my interest in another part of the world. Belgium, let's hear you!

maakte van het gebeuren een verslag. Wij zijn zo vrij geweest zijn geschriften hier beschikbaar te stellen (verslag lezen). Snakes in Exile verrast vriend en vijand met een opmerkelijke tweede CD. 'Second skin' is inderdaad een nieuwe huid die de groep omhoog tilt naar een ongekend niveau. Waar op de voorgaande werken de groep nog niet echt volwassen overkomt, hebben we hier te doen met een brok dynamiet. De virtuozen zijn vooral op vocaal vlak gegroeid. De stemmen klinken stuk voor stuk sterker en passen perfect in elkaar. Snakes in Exile houdt zich niet bezig met het letterlijk naspelen van Ierse folkmuziek, de mannen geven de voorkeur aan een aanpak met een volledig eigen geluid. Dit lukt ze uitermate goed. Naast een aantal sterke eigen composities, als 'Taboo or not Taboo' en 'Angels on sale' zijn een aantal commerciëlere tracks opgenomen. 'The raggle taggle gypsy' en 'The lord of the dance' zijn herboren in de tijdloze arrangementen van het drietal. Het meest opvallende nummer is het a-capella gezongen 'Jumpin' Jack Flash' van de Stones. Peter Van Aken, Gert Meulemans en Luc Baillieul verdienen ongetwijfeld een muziekprijs. Als 'Second Skin' geen internationale doorbraak betekent, dan weet ik het niet meer.
Ron Janssen, New Folk Sounds 10/99 'Snakes in Exile liefern eine CD mit Songs, die vorwiegend aus der irisch-schottischen Ecke stammen. Diese werden von Gert Meulemans (vocals, bass, mandoline), Peter Van Aken (vocals, accordion, piano, whistling) und Luc Baillieul (vocals, guitar, bodhran) vorwiegend mehrstimmig vorgetragen. Und hier liegt sicherlich die Starke der CD: Der mehrstimrnige Gesang wirkt kraftvoll, die Arrangements sind gefällig und gehen von poppig (Imaginary Stairs) bis hin zu Anklängen an Great Big Sea bei den traditionellen Songs wie Raggle Taggle Gipsy. Ein netter Gimmick, obwohl nicht richtig Folk, ist Jumping Jack Flash von den Stones in a capella. Die starkeren Songs sind sicherlich die selbstgeschriebenen Stücke … Die CD der Schlangen Im Exil erscheint auf dem belgischen Label Wild Boar Music, bei dem sich in letzter Zeit ja einige hervorragende Gruppen, allen voran Shantalla (s.u.), hervorgetan haben. Auch die Snakes enttäuschen uns nicht.

……….. we close the main stage with much help from the audience ………. Phil Tennant is around for a drink afterwards and the Snakes in Exile lads from Belgium give fantastic a capella renditions of 'Green and Red of Mayo' and 'Share the Darkness' ………. Saturday starts slowly and before we know it we're doing the short 'acoustic' set on the BBC Radio 2 Stage………… when Davy asks if anyone knows the words to 'I useta lover', Carla puts up her hand and bravely comes up on the stage to perform the song, very well too!……… (does anyone have any photos?, Carla would love one)……… then the Belgian Boys join us for 'Green and Red' and 'N17' and we're off into the Saturday afternoon of the festival.
Officiële "Saw Doctors" webstek Belgian trio that rocks up Irish trad with gusto if not subtely. Much more interesting are their own songs (with rather good English lyrics) and their wonderfully titled tune 'Young master Dribble'.
fRoots 10/99 De Ierse folkboom die al enkele jaren bezig is, heeft tot gevolg gehad dat ook op het vasteland ettelijke niet-Ieren Ierse folk zijn gaan spelen. Dit mondt uit in weinig koren en massa's kaf en vreemd genoeg lijkt er aan die trend geen einde te komen. Wat Snakes In Exile betreft kunnen we echter zonder risico beweren dat zij een deel van het koren zijn. Second Skin is een zeer gevarieerd plaatje geworden waarin verschillende echo's galmen. De geest van The Men They Couldn't Hang van begin jaren '90 is het nadrukkelijkst aanwezig en dat weze een compliment.
Olivier Verhelst, 't Bourdonske 02/02/99 St.-Patrick, de patroonheilige van Ierland, verjoeg volgens de legende alle slangen van het eiland. Vandaar de naam van deze Vlaamse groep die het zoekt in de Keltische overlevering en daarmee ook in Ierland en Engeland succes oogst. Hier serveren zij Ierse en Schotse traditionals én eigen werk, gaande van nostalgisch tot uitbundig feestelijk, met een sound waarin zowel de popfan als de folkliefhebber zich kan vinden. De Stones-klassieker 'Jumpin' Jack Flash' krijgt zelfs een merkwaardige a-capellaversie.
Dominique Trachet, Dag Allemaal Snakes in Exile review - Cambridge Festival - Club Tent, Thursday 29 July 1999 This Belgian band are clear Festival favorites, and their a cappella version of Jumping Jack Flash (I kid you not), for which they rope in their sound engineer, must be the crowd's favorite song by these Festival favorites, and that's saying something, and I'm not arguing with it. Their main influence is Irish traditional (and music from all corners of North America) and their own compositions bear this stamp. Here in the club tent they were joined by Dansaul's Guy Fletcher, who stepped out from behind the drums every now and then to add some demon fiddle to the arrangements. Piano accordion, acoustic bass, rhythm guitar, Flemish names (band members, not song titles) shaven heads (you know the sort of lads, hiding their sensitive side) strong vocal harmonies, lots of leaping about. Who could complain? Nobody, as far as I could see, especially not the bloke in the crowd waving the Belgian flag. The band has a website too (www.wildboarmusic.com), and you can order their album Second Skin (which features Jumping Jack Flash) through it. That album and their first Songs and Salads are on sale around the site, just like every CD you'll hear mentioned at Cherry Hinton Hall. Fans of the band can catch them at the Fleadh in Luton next weekend. Snakes in Exile go for the lively stuff, songs and dance tunes, and certainly got the crowd going.
